ON her first day on the job back in Australia, the face of David Jones Miranda Kerr stepped straight into the next round of store wars between DJs and its bitter rival Myer.

The leggy brunette was rolled out for modelling duties as the store bragged about their latest fashion steal from Myer, signing up the lucrative business of menswear label Industrie exclusively to David Jones.

David Jones fashion boss, Collette Garnsey, said bringing over the brand exclusively to its stores was a win.

"We anticipate doubling our sales of Industrie in the next 12 months," she said.

Nick Kelly, the managing director of the menswear label said he was not walking away easily from his 10-year relationship with Myer that was worth $35 million in annual sales, but had opted for David Jones over Myer in the current tough economic times.

"The recession isolated the facts that we are going to sell less garments and you have to choose your best distribution channels that you believe will get the best price and the best service over the next few years," he said.

But Myer claimed yesterday that losing the label from its racks was no great loss.
"The decision was a mutual one between Myer and Industrie last year, as the brand did not strategically fit with our vision for the future," said Myer spokesman Mitch Caitlin.

"We made the decision to refocus on brands that were much better performing in the menswear business."

While the war of words was flying between the two stores Kerr was kept busy modelling with top model Didier Cohen, who is the new face of the brand.

ATHLETICISM and a good sense of humour are the keys to success in next year's Who's Who, with new entrants including Stephanie Rice, Chris Lilley and Miranda Kerr.

Sports people, comics and models have swum, joked and catwalked their way into the 2009 edition. Gold medals did it for Stephanie Rice, a silver logie for comedian Chris Lilley and beach-bronze bodies for television models Miranda Kerr and Gemma Ward.

Iron, though, was good enough for mining billionaire Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest. The 2009 edition, which runs to 2282 pages and 13,378 small biographies, includes 332 newcomers. Who's Who publisher Helen Christon says they are picked for their significant contributions to Australian life.Significance, however, is in the eye of the beholder.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr's listed achievements include being our first Victoria's Secret angel. Gemma Ward is best known as the face of alien chic and for being romantically linked to the late actor Heath Ledger. Neither achievement, though, is included in her small biography.

The leather-bound directory to the rich, powerful and famous was first published in 1906. Entrance is priceless, in as much as you can't buy your way in, but friends in high places never hurt.

Therese Rein, who missed last year's Who's Who despite a $170 million business empire, makes an overdue debut. Unlike their partners, MPs are almost an automatic inclusion.

Law and government hogs one-quarter of the book, while academics fill another 24 per cent. There are 109 new entries from government, parliament and diplomacy. Unions take up just 1 per cent of the entries.

Popular faces in next year's book include Socceroo coach Pim Verbeek and captain Lucas Neil plus the Wallabies coach, Kiwi Robbie Deans.Elsewhere in sport, Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmour surf in and jockey Darren Beadman saddles up.And TV figures through comic Brian Dawe, news presenters Tony Jones and Anton Enus. But despite the new additions, the Who's Who roll call remains an old boys' club. The average age of entrants is 64, and 79 per cent of the notables are men.

BIKINI beauty Miranda Kerr won't be walking down the aisle any time soon.

The Aussie model has denied weekend reports she would wed her boyfriend, actor Orlando Bloom, next year and had been in Venice last week celebrating their engagement.

The Victoria's Secret beauty was in the Italian city to shoot David Jones's autumn/winter campaign. The engagement news has sent gossip websites into overdrive for the past 24 hours, leaving Kerr's agent, Carlii Lyon, to set the record straight yesterday.

"Miranda herself has clearly stated she is not engaged," Lyon said. "There is nothing else to be said." The A-listers - dubbed Kerr-Bloom - live together in New York and began dating more than a year ago.

They have been the subject of persistent wedding rumours. Kerr, 25, last week revealed she gets frustrated at being constantly asked about her superstar beau. "Everyone asks me to talk about him and they get really annoyed with me when I say no," she said.

"But if you want to know about him, why don't you go and ask him? I'm sorry, but that's just how it is." While her modeling photography career is soaring, Kerr is looking to life beyond the catwalk. She will bring out a self-help book for young girls, Treasure Yourself, next year.

FORMER Brisbane schoolgirl Miranda Kerr makes looking gorgeous look easy.

But Kerr's mum, Therese, has revealed her daughter, who commands millions as one of the world's most in-demand clothes hangers, could have easily found herself a different career had her mother had her way.

When talent scouts followed up photos of Miranda, sent to Dolly magazine's annual model search contest in 1997, Therese admits she tried to foil their plans to be female model from the very start.

"I even sent in photos of her with crooked teeth so she wouldn't win. I didn't tell her until after she'd won. And she won, damn it," laughed Therese.

More than a decade later, mum admits "we still worry about her".

But despite the oceans and worlds apart they may seem, Miranda always remains only a phone call away. Therese said: "We talk every day and she texts me every time she gets on a plane and lands again to say she's safe.

"It's important for our peace of mind. She's still our only little girl."

And a financially savvy one at that. Miranda recently flew her mum to New York to help set her daughter up with a business manager they can all trust with the millions Miranda's banking – reportedly $3.5 million last year.
